Forget Rolls-Royce’s claims of producing the best cars in the world; ever since Mercedes unveiled its first ever S-Class way back in 1965, the model has gone on to define the luxury saloon. Always big, powerful and packed with almost as much technology as a NASA space craft, the S-Class has always been one of the safest, most discrete and most comfortable modes of transport available anywhere at any price.
The fourth-generation S class code named W140 which was launched in 1991, once again set new standards for automotive design and technology being the first production saloons to offer double glazing and to come with electric rear blinds and electric head restraints along with every known optional extra available at the time. As with previous S class Mercedes there were a large range of engines and 3 body styles, Saloon, Coupe and the Executive long wheel base saloon, known as the SEL. A facelift in March 1994 brought minor styling tweaks, while from late 1996 all S-Classes were fitted with ESP and Brake Assist. The W140 bowed out in 1998.
